Birthmarks & Vascular Lesions

Birthmarks

For many, birthmarks are a lifelong distraction, culminating in a mix of camouflage attempts or specific clothing which covers an obvious mark

There are two main categories of birthmarks.

  • Red birthmarks are made up of blood vessels close to the skin surface, and are called vascular birthmarks.
  • Pigmented birthmarks are areas in which the color of the birthmark is different from the color of the rest of the skin

Vascular lesions

Vascular lesions are skin blemishes that occur as a result of abnormal blood vessels directly underneath the skin, giving them a red color. Sometimes called spider veins, these blemishes are usually quite visible and many patients choose to have them treated with a medical laser. During treatment, the laser energy is absorbed by hemoglobin, the red pigment in blood cells. This causes the red cells to clear and results in the disappearance of the vascular lesion

  • Telangiectasia - small dilated blood vessels common around the nose on the face
  • Spider veins - seen frequently on the ankles, legs and thighs.
